This glossary serves as a reference guide to the makers and patterns represented in my collection. Entries are organised first by known pattern numbers, followed by alphabetised items where no number has been recorded. Where a maker is known but the pattern is not, pieces are listed by item type. This archive is updated regularly as new information becomes available and as additional examples are identified.
Ankerglas was a long‑running German glassworks based in Bernsdorf, Saxony, operating from 1872 to 1987. It began as Glasfabrik Gebrüder Hoffmann in 1872 and produced a wide range of domestic pressed glass, including trinket sets and decorative tableware. In 1941, the Hoffmann family name disappeared from the company as a result of wartime restructuring, but production continued under the Ankerglas identity. Throughout the mid‑20th century, the factory became known for its moulded patterns and colourful boudoir sets, many of which are now collected internationally. Ankerglas remained active until its closure in 1987, leaving behind a distinctive body of German pressed glass. glasstrinketsets.com

Bagley & Co., founded in 1871 in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, began as a bottle‑making works before expanding into domestic glassware in the early 20th century. By the 1920s–30s, the firm had become one of Britain’s leading producers of Art Deco pressed glass, celebrated for its pastel frosts, geometric forms, and refined mould work. Their designs — including Wyndham, Grantham, and Queen’s Choice — helped define affordable elegance between the wars. Post‑1945, Bagley introduced ranges such as Crystaltynt, Jetique, and Crystopal, continuing to innovate in colour and form. Production carried on until the company’s closure in 1975, leaving a legacy cherished by collectors today.

A small Leeds maker active in the 1930s–1950s, trading under the name Barnook. The firm is linked to Jack L. Barnett of Meadow Lane, known through a surviving trade listing and a handful of marked domestic wares. Barnook produced pressed glass for everyday use, including measuring glasses and a celery vase registered as RD 809140 in 1936. Surviving examples are scarce, reflecting the modest scale of production and the utilitarian nature of the pieces. Barnook represents one of Yorkshire’s lesser‑documented glass workshops, contributing to the region’s broader tradition of small domestic manufacturers.

__________
Century Glass Works emerged in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in the early 1930s, specialising in affordable pressed glass at a time when demand for decorative yet practical household wares was rising. Known for its clean moulded lines, pastel tints, and functional tableware, the firm produced a wide range of bowls, jugs, trinket sets, and utility pieces that echoed the broader Art Deco aesthetic of the period. Although never as large as neighbouring Yorkshire glasshouses, Century carved out a steady market through reliable quality and accessible pricing. Production continued into the post‑war years, after which the company gradually declined, leaving behind a modest but distinctive body of collectible British glass.

__________
The Libochovice glassworks was established in 1912 in the town of Libochovice, in what is now the Czech Republic. Founded by Josef Feigl and Ladislav Morávek, the factory originally specialised in utility and packaging glass, including siphon bottles that were widely exported. By the 1930s, Libochovice expanded into decorative production, opening a painting workshop and introducing moulded designs by artists such as Karel Zentner, whose animal‑themed pieces became popular across Europe.
After nationalisation in 1945, the glassworks became part of the Sklo Union group, which modernised production and positioned Libochovice as a key manufacturer of hand‑pressed glass. From the 1960s onwards, designers including Rudolf Jurnikl, Adolf Matura, and Pavel Pánek created distinctive geometric and sculptural forms that defined the factory’s mid‑century style.
Today, Libochovice glass is valued for its bold pressed patterns, industrial craftsmanship, and its important role in 20th‑century Czech design.
